I don't know if anyone else has run into this in other parts of the world, but it seems that no child under 4 ever wears normal pants. They all have trousers with a slit down between their legs. This means that multiple times a day you run into little children peeing on the ground.

It's not what they're doing either, but it's how they're doing it. None of them ever do it on their own. Usually grandma or grandpa are squatting down with the child and holding their legs apart in their arms while doing it. It's just... very peculiar. It's not that the kids aren't potty trained either. They wear diapers when they're not, but once they become potty trained, they'll have their bums flying in the wind, even in winter! It's just.... bizarre.... can't they pull their pants down?

Oh and better yet, they are whistle trained. When grandma and grandpa want the kiddie to pee, they whistle. Then the kiddie pees. It's.... well, I dont' even know what to say about that.

The thing is that they also don't really care where the kid does it. Last week, I was on the Shanghai Metro and grandpa took the kid to the door and he tried to get the kid to go when the doors opened at the stop. However, the doors only open for about 30 seconds so when the doors shut, he just let the kid go on the floor. Then they sat back down and life continued. No one said a word. No one cared.....  This is a major metropolis!

Anyway, this is also why no Chinese person ever sits on the ground. They've learned this art of squatting that I don't think our legs are even capable of. You probably have to have been squatting like this since you were 3 to be able to do this....  So right, no Chinese person ever sits on the grass or on the floor and now we know why. There's pee everywhere.

Great stories, Kid. Keep up the good work....save these notes....with your talent and imagination, you might consider combining all these little trials and adventures into a guidebook for student travelers.
As to the "Split Pants" story...not unusual in rural parts of the world. This was quite common when I was a tyke, and I grew up in Queens!!! I have old photos of cousins in Italy with split pants, but I only remember that being the case for little boys....I'll have to ask my sister.
I hope your "visa" problem has been solved....if not, I'll be looking forward to a round of golf, at Morefar, with you and JK.
Please say, "hi" to Boy-O-Boy-o. Hope all is going well in his new job.
Later...Ox

Interesting that you used to see the split pants too. I've never seen it anywhere else and at least here, it just seems really dirty.... The kids have their bare bits out touching everything. And believe me, nothing in this country is clean.

My "Split Pants" accounts relate to a time about 60-70 years ago....country just recovering from the Great Depression, many refugees escaping the impending war in Europe, people made their own clothes, and "splits" made it easier for both parents and kids not to have to fumble with buttons (zippers were a luxury)....eggs were about .10 a doz, gasoline, before the war was about .12 a gal, the average wage was around .25 and hour.
Now NOBODY makes their own children's clothes, and the minimum wage is close to $7.00/hr.
Glad to hear your visa troubles have been solved.....Bali sounds Jolly!!
